SIL UI Educates Students on Environmental Sustainability

Depok – The University of Indonesia School of Environmental Science (SIL UI) campaigned for a smart generation to manage the environment with the Depok City Government by organizing community service activities for students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hidayah, Cinangka, Depok City on Saturday (5/11).

SIL UI Community Service Coordinator Bellanti Nur Elizandri conveyed the importance of providing environmental education for students.

“We need to equip students with knowledge and understanding of the environment and shape environmentally friendly behavior,” Bellanti said.

Dr. Hayati Sari Hasibuan, S.T., M.T., as the initiator and chairperson of the activity said that environmental education for the younger generation is a form of strategy to achieve a sustainable environment in the future.

“The sustainability of an environment is inseparable from the role of the younger generation as the drivers and holders of civilization in the future.” Sari said.

Dr. Rissalwan Habdy Lubis, S.Sos., M.Si, delivered the opening remarks at this activity. He hoped that the activity would take place in a two-way discussion so that it could foster a scientific spirit in students.

“We hope that all participants are expected to actively participate in receiving the series of materials provided.” he concluded.

Some of the educational materials presented were clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS), waste management (Maggot for Waste Management and Waste Shodaqoh), water management (Home Wastewater Management and Rainwater Utilization through SPAH Technology), and nutritious food.

This activity was attended by 100 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hidayah. One of the participants, Fachri, expressed his enthusiasm and testimony with the arrival of the community service team from UI.

“Yes, it was exciting, we learned that water plants have different functions. Some are used to purify water, add oxygen to water, water quality indicators, food sources for marine animals, and others.” Fachri said.

Also present in this activity were students of the Master of Environmental Science Program, Dr. Mortaza A Syafinuddin Hammada, M.Si., (Head of Organization and Management of the Indonesian Environmental Scientist Association), Mulyadi, S.Pd., (Vice Curriculum of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Hidayah), and Dr. Rissalwan Habdy Lubis, S.Sos., M.Si, (2nd Vice Chair of the Indonesian Environmental Scientist Association).
