Kalibaru residents turn shells into economically valuable products
Kalibaru Village, especially RW 01, is where fishermen and shellers live and work. Every day, fishermen bring hundreds of kilograms of shells in the morning and shellers work every day peeling up to 100 kg. A lot of shell waste after shelling is thrown into the sea or the residents’ main road without any management action. The bad odor and the many flies swarming around the piles of shell waste make the environment of RW 01 residents unhealthy. Solutions are needed to reduce this waste. One of them is the innovation of making products of selling value, which is suspected by lecturers of student funds in the Pengabian and Community Empowerment activities from the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Indonesia.
Led by Dr. Hayati Sari Hasibuan, the clam shell waste utilization activity was carried out at the Fishermen Cooperative location, RW 01, Kalibaru Village. Shell waste in the Kalibaru coastal area has good economic potential. The existence of innovation in the utilization of shell waste can be an alternative to making various kinds of products such as craft products, liquid fertilizer, animal feed, to substitute materials for paving blocks and bricks.
At the same time, on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, an event was held at the Fishermen’s Cooperative which was attended by North Jakarta SUDIN, DINAS, BRIN, representatives of the Kalibaru Village and community and SIL UI. At the event, the inauguration of Community Service and Empowerment (PENGMAS) activities was held simultaneously for several activities other than the Utilization of Shell Waste, namely for Rainwater Harvesting, Clean and Healthy Living Behavior, Solar Energy Utilization, and Ubran Farming on the coast.
In addition, residents who were mostly shelling ladies along with the head of the fishermen’s cooperative also watched and became representatives of the Kalibaru community. The results of their processed clam shell products made in the last 2 weeks were displayed. The positive response from the audience to see the polished craft products was very supportive of SIL UI activities and Kalibaru residents, so development and innovation are expected.
Not only that, with the utilization of clam shell waste, it is hoped that the peeler women who work for family side income, have additional income from the sale of these products. In addition to craft products, other products that can be developed from shell waste are liquid fertilizer and animal feed which are processed in such a way and become quality and valuable products. The main activity of PENGMAS from SIL UI is to make a shell chopping machine that can facilitate the processing of shell waste so that the desired shell powder results are suitable and suitable for various products.
