Background

Research Cluster: Green Innovation, Sustainable Production – Consumption and Renewable Energy

In the coming decades, resource and energy demands will continue to increase, driven by worldwide population and economic growth and rising living standards in developing countries. At the same time, pollution and emissions must be significantly reduced to prevent adverse impacts on the environment and people. Addressing this dual challenge requires comprehensive policies through interdisciplinary research involving broad and sustained collaboration between stakeholders from academia, industry, government and communities.
Recognizing this, the School of Environmental Sciences Universitas Indonesia (SIL-UI) established the “Green Innovations, Sustainable Production-Consumption and Renewable Energy” research cluster that focuses on addressing the challenges of population growth, resource consumption, energy and environmental degradation from an inter-disciplinary research perspective.

About

Research Cluster: Environmental Economics for Sustainable Development

Environmental Stewardship leads to Economic Growth=Green Growth. Proper analysis of the causes of environmental degradation can provide solutions so that environmental improvement causes economic growth, or economic growth can actually improve environmental conditions.

Study Focus

Collective Action
  • Environmental problems cannot be solved without the participation of the community or collctive action. How collective action from the community can protect the commons environment through actions that are not opportunistic behavior or Governing the Commons. The Environmental Economics Cluster will focus on analyzing community activities and examining how efforts to prevent the tragedy of the commons, and collective action among the community.
External Disutility

Study of External disutility, or the difference between PMC (Private Marginal Cost), and SMC (Social Marginal Cost). and think of policy solutions based on both Pigouvian tax (Environmental Tax) and Coase Theorem.
Environmental tax policy varies greatly depending on the problem
How to implement PPP (Polluter Pays Principle) and ERP. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy that requires producers to take responsibility for goods that have been consumed by recycle, reuse, and reduce.

External Utility

The study of external utility such as the valuation of ecosystem services through environmental valuation at the macro level and at the micro level. Such as the application of Green GDP for valuation efforts at the macro level or project evaluation, natural resource damage assessment or environmental accounting at the regional / company level, and ecosystem service valuation (environmental evaluation) for coastal ecosystems, forests, cities, villages, sites and others. The approaches used are WTP (Willingness to Pay), WTA (Willingness to Accept), averting behavior, hedonic price approach, and travel cost approach with applications that are in accordance with conditions in Indonesia.

Property Right

The Ecoling Cluster will also focus on institutional studies, because institutions are considered to support the prevention of community failure, market failure, and government failure. One of the concerns is the agrarian system and property rights that are often related to environmental degradation for environmental conflict problem solving.

Kajian Mengenai Gambut
  • Studies on peat degradation and restoration are conducted using environmental economic methodologies, such as analyzing policies on underground water levels. The government’s policy of charging a price for water 0.4 meters below ground level can be analyzed using environmental economics methodology through an environmental services valuation approach and PES (Payment for Ecosystem services) principles for peat restoration. There will also be a study on carbon trade and its application to improve peat conditions in Indonesia.
