SIL UI Opens Master’s Program in Disaster Management

The School of Environmental Sciences (SIL) at the University of Indonesia (UI) opened a new study program in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year, namely the Master of Disaster Management (MMB) study program. The opening of the study program was motivated by the needs of stakeholders and the community in terms of implementing disaster management.

“In line with SIL’s mission, which is to produce graduates who have competence in the field of environmental science who can develop the role, service, and professional appearance of human resources, the Master of Disaster Management study program is expected to provide service to stakeholders and the community in the form of science development, analysis, and disaster problem solving with an inter and multidisciplinary disaster management science approach,” said Dr. dr. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M.Si, Director of SIL UI.

Dr. Fatmah, M.S., coordinator of the establishment of the MMB SIL study program explained that, “The high number of disaster events in Indonesia since the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh in 2004 until the emergence of Covid-19, has prompted the need for disaster management efforts, namely steps related to disaster observation and analysis as well as prevention, mitigation, preparedness, early warning, emergency response, disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction. Therefore, experts in the field of disaster management are needed to answer the demands of national development directions and policies based on disaster risk reduction.”

The MMB SIL UI study program will produce graduates who have the ability to assess processes, systems, and patterns of human-environment interaction through an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach to provide innovative solutions that are recognized nationally and internationally for disaster management problems. The mission of the MMB UI Study Program is to produce graduates who have competence in the field of disaster management, build a scientific community in the field of disaster management, develop research in disaster science, develop community service to technological knowledge, problem solving in disaster management.

Students are expected to be able to demonstrate superior academic abilities in formulating and making decisions based on a spatial-holistic approach, handling disasters with a medical science and public health approach, mastering disaster management systems, and applying industrial technology 4.0.

In order to implement an independent campus in the UI environment, the MMB study program integrates an independent campus through courses as a graduation requirement, namely the case study path or final project (blended learning). The lectures are conducted face-to-face and virtually (PJJ / Distance Learning method). The final project of students in semester 4 is a case study or final project. The output produced is a case study report or final project paper. The total credits taken for 4 semesters are 40 Semester Credit Units (SKS) with details of SIL compulsory courses (MK) of 3 SKS, 33 SKS compulsory study program, and 4 SKS for elective MK.

In addition to Master of Disaster Management, at SIL UI there is a Master of Environmental Science Program and a Doctoral Program in Environmental Science. A more complete explanation of the MMB Study Program can be seen on the sil.ui.ac.id page. Registration for new student selection can be done online through the admission.ui.ac.id link.
