Environmental pollution and damage that occurs today is more anthropogenic in nature; the largest proportion of the degradation of environmental quality on earth is caused by human activities, whether intentionally or not. The response that then emerges is a variety of resolutions and preventive efforts that tend to be anthropocentric in nature as proposed by many experts. This then raises the hypothetical assumption that environmental management is basically identical to human activities management.
The concept of sustainable development refers to the agreement that development efforts to meet the needs and survival of the present are carried out without having to sacrifice the right to fulfill the needs of future generations. Environmentally sound sustainable development means efforts to improve the quality of human life while being aware of not disturbing and exceeding the ability of ecosystems that support life.
Human development and efforts to protect and preserve the environment must be integrated with each other if the sustainable development of human communities is to be achieved.
The development process is an interaction of various variables of the main factors of production, namely:
In terms of sustainable development, it is not only the five variables that must be sustained and maintained, but also the processes of interaction between them.
The first principle of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992) states that: Human beings are the primary goal of sustainable development. Humans have the right to a decent and productive life in harmony with nature.
Based on the above background, the Environmental Science Study Program has 3 (three) specializations, namely:
